Once upon a time in a small town in New England there lived a little boy named Jimmy and his faithful friend that happened to be a Saint Bernard dog named Buddy. Jimmy and Buddy would go everywhere together and from chasing frogs and toads to catching bugs. Every once in a while they would try to catch the beautiful butterfly that would come by them teasing them and staying just out of their reach. Jimmy would throw a stick and tell Buddy to fetch. Sometimes Buddy would do what he was told, but sometimes he would just sit there as if he didn't understand. Jimmy would then go to where the stick was and he would show Buddy what he was suppose to have done.

Sometimes they would take a swim in the creek that was nearby the house. Buddy would always make sure that Jimmy was safe and a few times would even let Jimmy get on his back when they were in the water. That was a fun thing to do and Buddy would of course do the doggie paddle. They would sometimes sit together on the side of the bank and do some fishing. Buddy would lay there next to Jimmy and would be very quiet until that is Jimmy would catch a fish and when Buddy seen it come out of the water he was just as excited as Jimmy was.

As the years went by Buddy wasn't able to do all the things that he and Jimmy did when they both were younger. And of course Jimmy's interest changed too and he wasn't home as much as when he was younger. There was football practice and he would hang out with his friends too. Then one day when Jimmy came home he was told that Buddy was very sick and so Jimmy stayed near Buddy that afternoon. Early in the evening Buddy gave Jimmy one more lick to let him know that he was still his friend and as Jimmy was petting Buddy, Buddy took his last breath. He had waited for Jimmy to come home and be with him.

Many years passed and Jimmy never forgot Buddy and through the years he has reminisced about all the things that they used to do together. There would never be another Buddy that is for sure because he was a one of a kind dog. There would be others similar to him, but Buddy's personality was as if he was almost human at times.

Jimmy grew up and had a family and he had another dog that meant a great deal to him and he had lots of fun with that dog too. Many years later he looks back and comments on how much he enjoyed having the two dogs in his life.
